New commit Chad Hill talks Air Force
Posted Dec 20, 2012
Ron Burton's Carolina roots paid off this recruiting season as the Air Force Academy landed top Charlotte area talent Chad Hill. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound defensive back, who played at York Comprehensive High School on the South Carolina side of the border, gave his verbal pledge to the Falcon staff just days after receiving the offer.
"Coach Burton was in my house on Tuesday when I made my commitment," said
. "I saw how well [
] takes care of their players after graduation. Coach Burton showed me the facilities and they look very nice, top-of-the-line. When you play at Air Force you're competing against the best of the best. I like how they schedule good teams every year.
"I just received the offer last weekend. They told me they liked my aggressiveness on the field, my footwork, and how I moved down hill. I'm being looked at for safety or possibly cornerback."
Hill has yet to step foot on campus, which speaks volumes to the coaches persuasiveness as well as the merits of the Air Force program. He does plan on taking his official visit the weekend of January 19th.
Playing for the York Cougars, Hill started out as a linebacker his sophomore and junior seasons before moving to safety as a senior.
"This year I played safety, slot receiver, and punt and kick return," York said. "I was second on the team in tackles with 118. I had four interceptions, 16 pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. My speed improved as the season went on. I really feel like I got a lot faster with better footwork. I also played with a better understanding of the game. Although it was my first year at safety, being a starter three years on varsity has taught me a lot. It was definitely a good season."
The Cougars finished the season at 10-3. Their three losses were by a combined eight points. They fell to South Pointe by a field goal in the second round of the
Class AAAA Division II state playoffs on November 16th.
Now that the season is complete Hill is working out hard and trying to up his test score so he'll be ready for the Academy next summer.
"I'm working out at Velocity Sports Performance where a lot of the top Charlotte area athletes go to condition," he explained. "I'm doing speed and agility training as well as working out in the weight room three times a week. If I can raise my SAT score it will give me the opportunity to go straight into the Academy and that's what I'm hoping to do.
"When I get there next summer, I just want to be the best player I can be. I try not to set goals because if you hit your goal, then it's like 'what's next?'. My goal is going to be to do my best and learn as much as possible in the first year."
Secondary coach, Steve Russ, also has roots in The Carolinas. He coached at
prior to joining the Falcon staff in 2012. He get a chance to groom Hill. The Falcons need some playmakers in the defensive back ranks. In their last game against
, the team gave up 452 passing yards. Hill brings in both linebacker toughness and cover corner speed.
