LAS VEGAS (AP) Sept. 18, 2004 - Shaun Carney completed 12 of 14
passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns to lead Air Force to a 27-10 victory
over UNLV on Saturday night in the Mountain West Conference opener for both
teams.
Carney also ran for 64 yards for the Falcons (2-1). Dan Shaffer added 98
yards on 21 carries, and Adam Cole rushed for 58 yards on 11 carries.
Shane Steichen was 12-of-24 for 160 yards and two interceptions for UNLV
(0-3). Dominique Dorsey rushed for 54 yards on 14 carries, and Earvin Johnson
had 99 yards receiving on seven catches.
The Falcons, who were penalized for only 20 yards and did not have a
turnover, took a 10-0 lead in the second quarter on Mike Greenaway's 30-yard
field goal and Carney's 6-yard pass to Kris Holstege. Denny Poland set up the TD
with an interception.
The Rebels cut it to 10-7 on Steichen's 12-yard pass to Johnson with 40
seconds left in the half, but Carney found Alec Messerall for a 10-yard
touchdown play with 29 seconds left in the half to make it 17-7.
After Sergio Aguayo's field goal for UNLV cut the Falcons' lead to 17-10 with
4:48 left in the third quarter, Air Force countered with Adam Cole's 3-yard TD
run.
